Jasmine Release Party II; Stiff Crowd

From the "My first release party" Dept.

Went down to the Revival with Ann tonight for the Jasmine Magazine release party, part deux. Met up with Nirvan and Thomas.

A good turn out, lots of folks from Waterloo. Crowd was kind of the stiff. No vibe. A bummer really.

I bumped into Chung, we must talked for quite a while. The fashion show was okay. Some great designs. There was one model in particular that was, uh, stunning (READ: SMOKIN' HOT!).

Got to love those mixed chicks.

Standout performance from Masia One, the only Asian Hip Hop songstress I have ever seen.

All-in-all, a good time. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a magazine; they didn't bring enough.

Night all.

Car Wars: Online

From the "I love slacking at work" Dept.

Nick and I went downtown to the Second City Comedy Hall to view a small seminar on the Online Automotive Industry. Quite enlightening. Speakers ranged from Ford, Wunderman, BlastRadius (Mini.ca), ADEO (Nissan Canada - Shift_Expectations) and Volvo.

It was interesting to see what other companies are doing. It was also reassuring that even though it feels that we can't get our shit together at OnX, the other companies are not too far ahead. If anything, it is a very level playing field.

26 Year Bash

From the "Older and Wiser" dept.

Hey all,

My Birthday passed last Saturday.

Jen arranged dinner at Medieval Times, Toronto.

I had a good time. I've been an Dungeons & Dragons nut for a while (although I don't actively play anymore, I do own a set of there 3rd Edition Rules--just to read--No really, just to read), so anything that has to do with knights and swords really turns my crank.

Over all I was impressed with the show. It's akin to watching Pro Wrestling with swords and horses. Kind of hokey, but if you go with the right people....

The meal was mediocre at best:

  • Vegetable soup
  • Garlic Bread
  • Roasted Potatos
  • Half a roasted Chicken
  • One large Rib
  • Pepsi to Drink
  • Apple pastry for Desert

The serving was huge though.

Our knight, the blue knight, was a jobber. He died in the second round of the games.

One interesting question did arise though:

If the goal was to choose your "champion" Knight from the six most bravest and loyal knights you have, does it make sense for them to battle-to-the-death? Poor HR Management in my opinion.

After dinner we went out to the Bier Market. The music was good, the mix was good, a lot of people showed up and I got to spend some time with each of them.

All-in-all, it was a good time, and I couldn't have spent it with better people.

Surprises for the 26th Birthday

From the "A good string of luck" Dept.

It was a great B-day.

On Friday, I called Infonec Computers to get the status of my RMA. It finally came. So I rushed my ass there and picked up my new mobo with only 5-minutes to spare--the store was just about to close.

I ran back home, skipped dinner, took a bunch of telephone wire and made a homemade grounding strip and assembled my computer. Turned it on and it has all been good since.

Dual-CPU computer is interesting. Performance wise it isn't any faster than a single cpu in most cases, but there are times when I have 20 applications open and the system is still responsive--very nice.

I'm still setting stuff up. Can't wait to install Gentoo.

It was great to be able to get my computer up and running before Jen dropped by. She also had a surprise for me:

My very own 10GB iPod

It's nice to be part of an elite technocrati--everyone at work was drooling.

Sound Body

From the "Fatty vs Thin" Dept.

I've decided to run an experiment.

As of last Monday, I started running on the treadmill again. 20 minutes only. The first 8 minutes was at 8.5 Km/h, the second 8 minutes was at 9.0 Km/h and the final 4 minutes was at 10.0 Km/h. My goal is to do this every day.

Well, it was the second day today. I was on the treadmill again. My legs feel blasted right now, but they're not too sore. I'm beginning to think that doing this everyday is reasonable. We'll see how my legs feel at the weekend.

I'm hoping this will help regulate my sleeping habits as well.

Sound Mind

From the "A great victory was won today" Dept.

So after after more than 6 hours of deliberation, I finally convinced the team that my model for inter-application parameter passing was the correct, most user friendly implementation.

It was a good day for your "Friendly Neighborhood Usability Guru"

Weekend Review: Wendy and Henry

From the "It has begun" Dept.

A picture of Wendy and Henry's Banquet Hall

Wendy and Henry got married on Saturday. It was a glorious day. The weather was perfect. No screw ups in the ceremony. It was great to see the two of them get hitched.

A picture of Wendy and Henry's First Dance

I gave my pictures to Kevin. When he is done, he will have it uploaded to his site.

I wonder who will be the next to get married?

Weekend Cometh

From "It's been a hard week" Dept.

I've been looking forward to the weekend--as I'm sure that all of you have. Wendy and Henry commit their marital nuptuals tomorrow--should be a fun time.

I'm tired--seriously stressed the passed few days. I've been doing Quality Assurance on the applications that we are building; confirming business functionality. On one end, we've come a long way. On the other, we're not at the finish point by a long-shot.

That's just stressful.

I'm blogging at work now, trying to look busy--can't think. I'm congested and tired. I just want to sleep, but I have to pick up my dad at 6 pm.

What would be perfect right now...

From the "Wishful thinking." Dept.

What would be perfect right now would be for Infonec to call and say my mobo is ready to be picked up.

I could assemble my computer and burn it in tomorrow while I'm at the wedding.

Managing Expectations: Must Kill Collin

From the "Congrats to Collin and Cheryl" Dept.

Cheryl and Collin got engaged last week while vacationing in Maui.

Congratulations are in order!

Unfortunately Collin didn't consult the boyz and he ended up buying a 1.32 ct. daimond engagement ring.

Punk.

How are the boyz and I suppose to "manage" the expectations of our women now?

I think we need to set up some sort of collusion scheme to drive down the expected prices of....

LOL!

Hiptop Envy - I wonder if Kev is overcompensating?

From the "I want one too" dept.

I've been asking a lot of questions about Kevin's HipTop from Fido Canada..

I want one. If they come up with a CompactFlash card slot with it...it's a definite purchase.

As for the overcompensating thing...I should be one to say...hell, I just built a dual cpu system (which is broken--must be a sign).

Labour Day Review: Zoo and Tdot White Party

From the "We are all Animals" Dept.

Jen and I had a great time at the zoo. If we had gone earlier, the animals would have been more active. Jen was impressed, as was I.

We really liked the prarie dogs. Two were sleeping on top of each other, much like Jen and I do when we take a nap. It's nice to see animal analogues to human behaviour.

Primates rock! The gorillas are very cool indeed. Especially the babies. I'm fortunate that "sitting on someone's head" is not appropriate in this day and age (seemed fine for the gorillas though). Oh, gorillas don't seem to have any problems picking each other's bums either.

Glad I'm not a gorilla.

From the "Tdot whitey party" Dept.

Went out to Cris's Tdot White Party - it was cool...kind of fcuk'd me over for work on Monday - Yes, I went to work on Monday.

OK Computer

From the "Computer woes" Dept.

The anticipation is killing me. I picked up my new video card (Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Ultimate). The neat thing about this card is that the board is completely fankless; thus, no noise. An added bonus is that the card is highly overclockable.

Wicked.

Unfortunately, it did no come with Tomb Raider: Angle of Darkness, as advertised. I have to call customer support tomorrow.

It's unfortunate that I don't have a motherboard to even all of my new toys.

From the "I hear the noise and my computer isn't even assembled" Dept.

I'm beginning to regret my choice of heatsink for my dual computer. It's not even on, but I can still remember <shudder>: the vibration and noise caused by my Vantec Aeroflows.

At 40 bucks a pop---they are almost as expensive as my cpu. So I can't just junk them.

I've added some foam spacers between the fan and heatsink. Maybe that will reduce the vibration.

Oh well, I won't know if it works or not until I get my mobo back.

Cheers,

Tai
